Becoming Dumber? October 30, 2007

I profusely enjoy reading the Thingamababy blog for many reasons.

It’s a dad’s view of baby and toddler stuff. And a practical one at that. He does reviews of such products but I don’t get the feeling that he’s trying to push or sell anything. Just his opinion based on what he sees and experiences. Good stuff.

What I especially like is his outlook about general life issues in regards to raising his daughter, and his distaste of branding and commercialism of products for children (e.g., Disney characters, etc.). Some of the recent posts I like are this, this and this. (I’m not big into branding of children’s products either. I would rather get a plain blue shirt than get one with a licensed character on it. They grow out of it so fast anyway!)

In the last link there is a comment about how American kids are becoming dumber with a link to an article. It’s very discouraging to see how society and the educational system is so-called declining.  Britney could be a good case.

High school students do not know how to form a sentence and write an intelligible paragraph?!!! Not only in our state but across America. Crazy.  I’m not smart but at least I could do that in high school.

What do you think? Is the next generation a bigger pile of idiots?  Is technology hurting rather than helping children?

IMO, the next generation is most definitely smarter. Need proof? I’ve seen a 3-year-old dominating a PSP game and when I asked her parent what she’s doing with a PSP, her reply was that all her classmates have PSPs. What?! Able to play video games at 3 years old?! Awesome.

However, I do also think that the next generation is spoiled beyond belief. I mean, come on, an entire class of 3-year-old’s with PSPs? Geez. And spoiled kids have no boundaries, which eventually leads to immature teens and young adults, and eventually adults who can’t deal with life. Britney, Paris, and Lindsey are the extremes, but lack of maturity can be seen in many different ways in adults.

Getting back to the intelligence debate, my opinion is that the next generation is more evolved, but have less direction, and the reason for that is because this generation doesn’t understand how to deal with their kids. Much like how our parents didn’t understand how to deal with us. Evolution is rough ;)

It is awesome that 3-year olds can play video games (better than you) but I just feel like having a whole class of 3-year olds with PSPs is a little extreme. Spoiled huh?

They also shouldn’t feel like they have to get one because their classmates have one or to feel outcast because of not having one. You know?

Lack of maturity still can be seen in MSO.

And it’s been difficult understanding both of them at times. :? But you just gotta keep trying to give that direction and understand.
