Nonsense from the Heart

Dealing with Dog Poop (Bags) March 5, 2008

Filed under: Pets — Coco Bean @ 4:51 am

DISCLAIMER: The following information is based on information found in cyberspace. And probably not even close to all of the information that you can find for poop bags. No companies were directly contacted nor does this little nonsensical site endorse any of these companies. Just presenting the information, people. And if I have any errors, please let me know. Because dog poop is important stuff too.

Can you believe dog owners do not collect over 4 million tons of dog waste annually?! 4 MILLION TONS! Outrageous!

And I don’t know how only until recently, dog poop wasn’t considered a huge biological hazard! Gross stuff that does indeed pollute our parks and sidewalks not to mention footwear after stepping into it.

MSO and I have been good citizens by doing our part to pick up our dog’s poop with bags snuggled in its convenient holder. Sometimes using three at a time during walks around the neighborhood. Yes, three! (It’s hard to open up a used bag to put more poop in.)

She’s also like a male dog that has to keep marking periodically during those walks. But that’s probably a whole other blog post. :?

Recently, I began to think more about whether or not those bags were really green. With all this green talk, you can’t limit yourself and not also think about the dog poop. From a search, it APPEARS that the bags that we use are biodegradable, but does it meet the ASTM D6400 standard?! Unfortunately, I’m not sure. Thus my search for a more green option.

Most plastic bags are mainly made from polyethylene, which is a by-product of the petroleum industry. Not only are there issues with the rate at which these bags break down, but the chemicals released as part of the decomposition process; organo-chlorine (highly toxic), methane (a greenhouse gas contributing to global warming) and nitrous oxide. [Green Living Tips]

With a bunch of companies saying this and that, and selling this and that, I wanted to compile some information in an attempt to make the best decision and share with other dog owners what I did find.

Degradable – Normally broken down when subjected to light, heat, and/or moisture.
Biodegradable – Rely on living micro-organisms to break down.
Hydro-biodegradable – Made from starch-based plants; in order to break down they must be in an environment with a lot of bacteria and during the decomposition process they give off a great deal of methane and carbon dioxide.
Oxo-biodegradable – Made from petroleum by-products; doesn’t give off the toxins like methane and carbon dioxide; bacteria break down the plastic into CO2, water, and humus.

See what I mean?

You do what works for you and beware of shipping if purchasing online. At least it’s another move in the right direction.

BioBag is the world’s largest brand of 100% biodegradable and 100% compostable bags and films made from the material, Mater-Bi. All of our products contain GMO free starch, biodegradable polymer and other renewable resources. No polyethylene is used in the production process. BioBag products meet ASTM D6400 specifications and California SB 1749 requirements.

Regular polyethylene-based plastic bags can take well over 100 years to degrade and are not compostable. Less than 2% of all plastic bags ever get recycled. Plastic bags litter our streets, backwoods and waterways. Studies indicate that 100,000 marine animals and 2 million birds die each year from ingesting or being caught up in plastic debris. Some manufacturers are blending additives to polyethylene to produce “degradable” bags. Unfortunately, this process fragments the bags into pieces of plastic debris that do not meet the ASTM D6400-99 standard for biodegradable and compostable plastic. These pieces cause serious harm when mistaken by animals and birds for food.

Product Claim:
100% biodegradable
100% compostable
No polyethylene used in production
Made from Mater-Bi
Contain GMO free certified corn instead of polyethylene

Soy-based inks and dyes are CEN certified

Dog Poop Bag Product:
BioBag Dog Waste Bags, 8″x12″

BioBag Dog holds the distinction of being the first biodegradable and compostable “plastic” pooper bag in the world.

The waste and the bag can be thrown in your backyard compost, where both items can decompose naturally; the waste and bag can be buried, where micro-organisms will quickly eat both; the waste and bag can be set at curbside with other yard wastes where communities collect biodegradable waste for composting.

Cost:
Sold 50 bags per package, 12 packages per case
Depends as BioBags are sold on the Internet through various retailers, or may be sold at your nearest natural food store.

There is a note that San Francisco residents can purchase BioBags at any Albertson’s, Cala/Bell’s, Cole Hardware, Rainbow Market, Real Foods, Whole Foods, or Walgreen’s Drug store.

  1. phoebe Says:

3 times!!! What the heck are you guys feeding her? And where can I get some?

  2. Coco Bean Says:

Nothing other than her kibble and some snacks in her Kong.

She’ll make a little pile here, another very little pile there, and then finally another very, very little pile over there.

It’s not something your dad and mom would want to deal with. :(

  3. Jo M Says:

Anyone know who manufactures rolls of biodegradable, similar to the bags on board type?

    They are definitely needed!!

  4. Coco Bean Says:

Jo M: I agree that those are definitely needed.

Per the linked article, the creator of Flush Puppies says that they’re working on a product that will fit in the Bags on Board dispenser.

  5. Kim Says:

You can get biodegradable poop bags by the roll standard at http://www.urbanleashandtreat.com.
They also have a bunch of other great eco products.

  6. yanosan Says:

Bags on Board, Dispoz a scoop and Plastics Solutions Canada cannot be described as biodegradable by any reasonable definition. Non of these meet the ASTM6400-99 Spec.

Another viable alternative are the bags by Snohomish, WA company SPIKE. These BUSINESS BAGS are made from renewable materials and biodegrade fully and completely.

Ooo these are cool bags! I need the Mum to get some for us dogs!

FlushDoggy, is a fully biodegradable, flushable(water soluble) dog poop bag that is very eco-friendly. Dog poops are best to be flushed down the toilet and degrade naturally , just as our own poops. Let’s stop destroying our earth and start educating the public, one poop at a time. Be a responsible owner and go green for our pets.

I flush my dog’s poops down the toilet with a flushable dog poop bag. Most eco-friendly way to get rid of poops.

There are flushable dog poop bags. The best answer probably because dog poop can get treated just as your poop is. Throwing dog poops into the trash overcrowds our landfills and pollutes our water system.

    Flushable Dog Poop Bags

  9. The first flushable dog poop bag was sold in August of 2000 in Madison, Wi.

The Flushable Bag is still the best product because it not only is eco friendly as a readily biodegradable flushable dog poop bag, it was designed to last and let you enjoy the walk with your dog.
